First steps in decluttering

Step 1: Have a moment of silence to get centered. Patricia can pray aloud a Christ-centered prayer if you request it.

Step 2: Gather materials together:

Fine or medium tipped marking pen

Boxes

Sticky notes

Step 5. Create a staging area for the decluttered items. If this is really difficult, move on to step 6. Choose a space that does not have much on it. Place these items on a space in the room to be de-cluttered–even if you need to pile them gently on top of each other in a corner.

If this is really difficult, you can take the boxes that you will sort below to another room–set on couch, or some other cleared space. Hall ways will work, also. This is very temporary.

Step 4: Gather up small things that you definitely need to have. Place them in the smaller shallow boxes. Place these items outside of the room in a hall way temporarily.

Step 4: Gather up the medium sized things you definitely need to have accessible: Place in larger shallow boxes

You can label the above boxes if you like, but since you will be keep this box in a handy place, and most likely can recognize the items, it is not absolutely necessary.

Step 5: Label boxes

Small

Medium

Large

Flat

You will not be sorting anything yet. The key is to go really fast in this first stage so you can quickly get decluttered and feel the great satisfaction of having cleared space.

Step 5. Now, start with the area you most want to declutter.

Papers, and all flat items like picture frames, office supplies, stuff to recycle–go in flat.

The other items are self-explanatory

If something is breakable, you can set them aside together on the space that is getting cleared. I recommend not packing in a box right now because it slows you down.

If something is very large–like a big pillow or bundle of clothes–you can stack in a corner or some other appropriate place. Breakable items like lamps can go near that corner.

Now, after everything is cleared, you should have a place to stack the boxes.

You are now ready to sort and get rid of things, or find homes for things.

But you can rest for now πŸ™‚
