But oh, what a glorious revelation has dawned upon me! After a lifetime of wandering and wondering, I’m refining my passion to guide families into the transformative embrace of multi-generational living.
Picture this: grandparents sharing wisdom and stories, parents weaving daily rhythms of love and support, children blooming under the watchful eyes of extended family—all under one roof, attached homes, or clustered homes. They are united in purpose. This isn’t merely a living arrangement; it’s a beacon of hope. I see this as a way to mend the fractures in our society by alleviating homelessness, dissolving loneliness, rescuing elders from the shadows of nursing homes, ensuring little ones are surrounded by caring adults even as parents pursue their callings, and so much more. .
Can you feel the stirrings of possibility? I certainly do, and it all traces back to my own epic quest. At just 18, an unseen force—a God I didn’t yet acknowledge—whispered adventure into my spirit, propelling me across oceans and into uncharted territories traveling overland from Germany to Turkey and beyond for 13 months. . For the next 51 years, I searched for my true niche, chasing fulfillment in every corner. Although at the end of my 13 month quest when I actually searched to find my “niche.”, truth illuminated my path: lasting joy blooms from selfless service, from pouring out the talents we cherish and enjoy the most. Once again, the God I didn’t believe in was merciful as he offered the revelation I needed to live in a purposeful way.
Today, as a devoted Christian, I stand in awe of how God has orchestrated this symphony. With over 25 years as a professional organizer and a half a century immersed in the vibrant world of intentional communities—living in, learning, and visiting them—I’m equipped like never before. I thought that in order to find a way to live communally, I had to find a new family.
But now, as I have come to embrace more than ever before my role as a parent and grandparent, I have finally found my community and my niche. As I lead my own family into our multi-generational homestead, joining my son, daughter-in-law, and four precious grandchildren, my soul sings with excitement. This is my calling, and perhaps it is yours, as well.
Multi-generational living is nothing short of a revolution that is actually picking up momentum even as I write this. It is a sacred strategy to salvage civilization and ignite unbreakable, healthy family bonds. Envision the synergy: homeschooling adventures fueled by collective wisdom, natural living practices where everyone tends the garden and harvests together, homesteads brimming with homegrown abundance. It’s the antidote to so many of our era’s woes. The isolation that dims spirits, the busyness that steals presence, the disconnection that erodes our foundations, the disruptive feelings that stem from the empty nest syndrome and so much more.
I’ve been researching this movement, and I’ve witnessed miracles in these setups: In my own experience with my son’s family, I’ve had the fun, exhilaration and inspiration of laughter echoing through shared halls, burdens lightened by many hands, generations weaving a tapestry of resilience and love. Yes there are challenges. But they can be opportunities for growth, and that’s precisely where my expertise shines.
