Are you dreading the task of packing for a move? Do you feel paralyzed and don’t know where to start? Or do you just want to be super efficient? I asked Leo, the Artificial Intelligence helper that I use, and I added my own suggestions.
Here are some tips that can make it easier for you to move.
Moving Made Easier: Organization Tips
To make your move smoother, consider the following steps:
- Sort and Purge: Go through your belongings and sort them into three categories: Keep, Donate/Sell, and Discard. Be ruthless – the less you have to move, the better. Sorting old papers including photos and memories, give yourself permission to leave those until the last minute. If you don’t get to them, it’s okay. These items are the most difficult and time consuming to process, and you need to focus on getting moved.
- Create a Moving Binder: Gather essential documents and information in a single binder with dividers that you can mark including:
- Moving contracts
- Inventory lists
- Contact information for movers, utilities, and services
- Change of address form
- Make a Room-by-Room Inventory: This is totally optional. If you are concerned about things going missing, take photos and create a list of each room’s contents, including:
- Furniture
- Electronics
- Decorations
- Clothing
- Create a staging area: Clear out a corner of a room and stack the boxes against the wall as high as is safe. See the following instructions so that you can find the boxes easily when unpacking.
- Pack Room by Room: Pack items from each room separately to make unpacking easier. Label boxes with their contents and the room they belong in.
- Color-Code Boxes: Use colored stickers or tape to categorize boxes by room or type (e.g., kitchen, bedroom). Notify the movers, or people who are helping, so they know what room the various colors go in. Make a piece of paper listing the rooms and the colors.
- Label and Track Boxes: Use a marker to label each box with its contents and the room it belongs in. Consider using a tracking system to keep tabs on which boxes have been loaded and unloaded. You can use 3 by 5 cards place in a card file with alpha tabs. Each box can have a number, and you can make a card with individual contents and place it in alpha order in the box. This can be used for organizing in general so you can keep track of things that you don’t use regularly, but need to find
- Prepare an Essentials Box: Pack a separate box with essentials like toiletries, medications, and a change of clothes for each person.
- Pack an Overnight Bag: Pack a small bag with essentials like a change of clothes, snacks, and entertainment for each person.
Packing Ahead of Time: A Smart Strategy. There is some repetition in the following, but hopefully it is reinforcing the idea: pack ahead of time!
Packing ahead of time can help reduce stress and make the moving process smoother. Consider the following benefits:
- Reduced last-minute chaos
- Less stress during the move
- More time to focus on other aspects of the move
How to Pack Ahead of Time:
- Start Early: Begin packing non-essential items 2-3 months before the move date.
- Label and Track Boxes: Use a marker to label each box with its contents and the room it belongs in. Consider using a tracking system to keep tabs on which boxes have been loaded and unloaded.
- Store Boxes Safely: Store packed boxes in a dry, secure area, such as a garage, attic, or storage unit.
- Room-by-Room Packing: Pack items from each room separately to make unpacking easier.
Leaving Essentials for a Month:
When packing ahead of time, you’ll want to leave essentials for a month in their current location. This includes:
- Clothing: Pack a few weeks’ worth of clothes, including essentials like undergarments, socks, and a few outfits.
- Kitchen Essentials: Pack a few weeks’ worth of non-perishable food, cooking utensils, and dishes.
- Medications: Pack a month’s worth of prescription medications and any essential medical equipment.
- Important Documents: Keep essential documents, such as identification, insurance cards, and passports, with you.
Tips for Packing Ahead of Time:
- Pack non-essential items first
- Pack an overnight bag with essentials
